December is not the best time of year to be looking for another job - most companies are more concerned with their office Christmas parties than taking on new staff! That said, I invested my time in working on some potential projects and it worked out well for me as can be seen below.

Building on my IVR experience, I developed a currency exchange rates information line for Jersey Post. The service allows callers to hear the current exchange rates for the 9 most popular currencies bought and sold by Jersey Post's Bureau de Change. Callers are also able to key in an amount and have it converted from pounds to a foreign currency or vice versa. For callers requiring assistance, the system transfers calls to the Customer Service call centre. I also developed a simple audiotext service that allowed callers to navigate through menu trees to obtain the information they required.

In the first quarter of 2001 I contracted for Foreshore Ltd, an internet data centre based in Jersey. Initially I worked on some Perl scripts that could be used both from the command line and from a web browser that allowed simplified configuration and management of some monitoring systems that were already in place. I also designed and developed CIS, their Customer Information System, using PHP. This application provides a central store for customer information and details of all the services that the customer subscribes to, IP ranges and domain names allocated etc.
