Having grown up in Europe and worked for a European telco I am very familiar with the operation of the GSM network and the components that form it, from basics such as making and receiving calls to the operation of roaming and the involvement of HLRs and VLRs.

SMS is a technology I am very familiar with and I have previously built a service that ties text messaging and databases together, using a third party out-sourced provider. The service allowed mobile phone users to send a text message to a given number with a keyword in the message body. Depending on the keyword sent, the user could receive information back via text message or register their phone for future alerts of upcoming events.

I have worked with WAP and WML and have successfully built and installed a number of WAP gateways using an open source product.
